Attack of the Green Monster: Making Sense out of Sustainable Events

Let’s face it: most of us rely on a
certain amount of unsustainable resources to maintain our daily
lives. Events are not much different in this regard, and if you aren’t careful, your event can become an unsustainable nightmare: beginning and ending with the consumption of one-time use materials. Even for the most seasoned event planner, creating a large green event can be likened to jumping through hoops of fire.

When we were hired to plan and execute the USGBC-LI (United States Green Building Council-Long Island Chapter) Annual Green Gala, we knew we had a small challenge on our hands.
With a guest list over 450 and a fairly strict budget, we had to make the best decision based on economics as well as being environmentally friendly. Unfortunately, going green usually costs a lot more green, even when buying in bulk. When having a green event, much thought needs to be put towards priorities; often times being completely green isn’t possible.

Going Green Checklist:
-What can you re-use? Can you use potted plants instead of flowers?
-Think about your event. If you are planning an elegant gala, why not use a functional party favor, such as sustainably resourced aluminum or steel water bottles complete with a company or organization’s logo? If you're planning on a company or team building outing, you could provide solar powered alarm clocks or flashlights as a party favor. Be creative and think about the client's industry!
- What can leave an imprint on people’s minds as well as being sustainable? Flashdrives are re-usable and are also a fantastic networking tool: you can put a presentation, photos or just the contact info onto every flashdrive that is handed out at the end of the event.

We chose to be as green as we could muster while respecting our client’s budget. This often meant having to purchase 50% or 75% recycled materials instead of 100%. We used biodegradable Verterra plateware, (made from a renewable resource of fallen leaves that actually helps the soil it’s composted in) for our cocktail hour.

Our goody bags were recycled paper, and the invitations were printed on 30% recycled paper.

It’s worth mentioning that prices for invites doubled and soon tripled after the 30% mark of recycled material. The party favor of the night were bamboo flash drives, and the awards used for the honorees were partially recycled glass.

Both small touches created a beautiful continuity to the entirety of the event.

Finally, the centerpieces we used were potted plants, and since the honoree of the event, Michael Dowling, is the president of the North Shore LIJ Medical System, they were donated to hospital waiting rooms after the event. There’s nothing better than having your post event creation continue to brighten someone’s day!

Why John Paul II does not deserve to be called a saint by the children of this generation and all generations to come

Keep this in mind, people of the world: John Paul II did nothing to stop thousands of pedophile priests under his Holy See – nothing until he died as the longest reigning pope since St. Peter. In fact, he elevated our own Cardinal Bernard Law who resigned in disgrace, as Archpriest in the prestigious mother basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome. John Paul II as “Holy Father” (and Canon Law and all his encyclical and theology writings) never saved nor protected children, not a single child, neither did he excommunicate any pedophile priests during his entire tenure as powerful Pope -- for over a quarter of a century. That is why the six thousand pedophile priests in the USA and around the world are aptly named after him as the John Paul II Pedophile Priests Army. That is .

Catholic sex scandal as undercover reporter 'films priests at gay clubs and having casual flings'

Caught in the act: A priest - still wearing his dog collar - approaches a gay 'accomplice' of the undercover reporter as their casual affair is caught on camera in the Italian magazine Panorama's footage

A gay priest sex scandal has rocked the Catholic Church in Italy today after a weekly news magazine released details of a shock investigation it had carried out.
Using hidden cameras, a journalist from Panorama magazine - owned by Italian Prime Minister and media baron Silvio Berlusconi - filmed three priests as they attended gay nightspots and had casual sex.

Today there was no immediate comment from the Italian Bishops Conference and the Vatican - which has been rocked by a series of sex scandals involving paedophile priests since the start of the year.

A preview of the Panorama article sent out by email last night added that video footage from the investigation would be made available.
The article describes how the reporter was assisted by a gay 'accomplice' as they 'gate-crashed the wild nights of a number of priests in Rome who live a surprising double-life.'
In it's preview, Panorama added: 'By day they are regular priests, complete with dog collar, but, at night it's off with the cassock as they take their place as perfectly integrated members of the Italian capital's gay scene.'

Panorama described its investigation as 'deeply disturbing' as it detailed how three priests - two Italians and a Frenchman - happily took part in gay events and had casual sex.

The Catholic Church forbids priests to have sex and homosexuality is also seen as a 'sin' .

In 2008 the Vatican issued guidelines which said that any would be trainees should not join if they had 'deep-seated homosexual tendencies'.

In one part of the investigation Panorama said that one priest, named as Carlo, willingly put on his cassock to have sex with the reporter's gay accomplice, adding 'all of which was filmed by the hidden camera'.

The magazine also described how they had attended a Mass which was celebrated by Carlo.

In its preview Panorama insisted that it had carried out through checks and established that all three priests were bona fide but would not reveal their real names or any other details.

Panorama editor Giorgio Mule said: 'This was a two week investigation and was not aimed at creating a scandal but showing that a certain section of the clergy behaves very differently.'

Comment

When we understand the history of the European papacy, we can see the time of Frankish appointees (about mid-900's) as their armies took over the papal states. The pagan pope Sylvester II is a good example - the Vatican frescoes reveal this paganism with "nymphs, cherubs" ,etc. Augustine and philosophy provides only a cold, dry belief system, requiring celibacy for its own sake, not to serve the Bridegroom Christ and others. 1,000 years ago the Frankish pope called Orthodox Christians "pagans"; now we see in living color who the pagans are. Christ the God-Man, delivers us from the evil one - if these "men" want to leave the hypocrisy and sin behind, there's repentance and renewed life in Him. See also "Sex Crimes and the Vatican" (youtube) revealing the present Pope as author of the veil of secrecy and guilt placed on the victims (!) under seal of the Confessional! Completely diabolical - come out from among them, we say!!

The Worst Opponent of Same-Sex Marriage

The Pope GRINCH

Pope Benedict is the worst anti-GAY religious leader.

It is imperative that we fight for and achieve GAY-marriage rights in the USA for our sake and that of our partners - so we can enjoy all the financial and tax benefits that heterosexual couples have...besides I'd prefer to give my pension benefits later on to my faithful partner (or he to me) than to Uncle Sam...

The Pope is desperately in dire need of plastic surgery at the age of 80...actually he'll be spending his 81st birthday in New York City.

So he has hired the openly GAY movie director (Jesus of Nazareth) Franco Zeffirelli as his papal image consultant.

Pope Benedict calls GAYS "morally intrinsic evil" people ...that technically makes his new papal image now a GAY Image...a "morally-intrinsic-evil-papal-IMAGE"!

Racism in America, …We Have Got to Go There. Got to!

Racism in America, …We Have Got to Go There. Got to!

I guess you can say, I just took my first sip of tea and now I know at least there can be some good found in what is being brewed, if only we can deal with it!”

Strangely enough, the Tea Party Movement has forced America to take a look at itself, by opening doors that require dialogue and a recognition that something is wrong in America. Among those doors opened is a much needed discussion on race.

A few months past, I blogged for the NRAAC, a series entitled: The National Republican African American Caucus Has It’s Say!: 18 Day Political Revival. During those eighteen plus days, I very openly dealt with the subject of race, just as an African American, I had attempted to do with the Republican Party going back to 2001. l even wrote a book about it, Black Eyes Shut – White Lips Sealed in 2004.

Now it is 2010, and still I am seeing those who are in denial, refusing to see that this is an issue which has to be addressed in America, if we are to go forth as a strong, united and healthy nation.

Maybe it is just the preacher in me, but each time I deal with this subject, the more I am convinced that racism is an issue of the soul. Because in my business, which is the business of redemption, saving, healing and maintaining of the soul, you gain expertise in the area of diagnoses, prognoses, treatment and prescription in caring for the human soul. Therefore, when it is sick, you cannot dance around this in denial. It is hard to ignore a diseased soul, when all of the symptoms are there and spilling over into society! The truth of the matter is that racism is a spiritual issue which first has to be dealt with by the spiritual institutions of society that includes the church. I never met a healthy soul, which did not require some sort of spiritual remedy to remain healthy.

I know there are those who will beg to differ, citing separation of church and state. But as a part of our political socialization, who we are spiritually, socially, economically, and even our education, where we were born, to whom we were born, how we are raised, all of this play a part in who we are.

Short of establishing a national religion, requiring that everyone believes the same, or forcing someone to believe against their will, one’s spirituality factors into who they are. There is no getting around this, nor should we try. There also is a recognition that there are some things which are best left to those spiritual elements of society to deal with, of which, if we neglect to do so, it will gravely impact government and society.

Whether we like it or not, racism is not an issue in which government should be the sole, or primary monitor. Government at best can legislate and attempt to enforce equality. But it is the inward soul, which has to be dealt with in order to provide a remedy for racism. It is not until brothers and sisters of kindred spirit, sit down at the table or kneel at the altar, acknowledge, confess, ask forgiveness, and forgive each other, that we are going to resolve America’s race issue. So who am I saying should step forward to provide a remedy for racism?

It is the spiritual institutions and elements of society!

It is those who have allowed racism to be manifested in spiritual doctrines of separatism, racial superiority and even hate.

The history of racism in America comes from the doctrine of the white church which taught that Whites were superior to Blacks. Therefore, Whites were created by God to be masters, and Blacks as slaves. Because of the doctrine of the Black race stemming from the curse of Ham and that one race is more favored by God than others, this became a foundational doctrine in some religious elements in our society overtly and even subliminally believed.

Historically it was the doctrine behind inferiority and ownership of slaves as mere property, which worked its way even into our Constitution through the “pursuit of happiness”. It provided an excuse for man’s inhumanity to man. This is the spiritual basis for the present racism in America. But as history has proven, this is an error in doctrine. However, for far too many years, this error has remained unchallenged and uncorrected by society – namely the church. Now this has become a doctrine so embedded within the foundation of some Christians, that to challenge it as being wrong is to require some to denounce their faith.

So no wonder when you hear some say, “God and Country”, you find what they truly mean is “God and Country to the exclusion of others”. This is what has caused the disease of the soul called racism. This is what keeps it alive, well nourished and even justifiable for some by way of the church.

When you believe this doctrine, it blocks the conscious from being pricked. It prevents the mind from rationally seeing and understanding that because of the sickness of the soul, the mind, the heart and even society are infected.

What do we do about it? We, the spiritual leaders of America, and more specifically the church, have got to go there! Got to!

As spiritual leaders, regardless of religious affiliation, we have to step forward at this troubling hour within our nation, acknowledge this as a spiritually created disease and provide the cure.

The cure is simple. It is affordable. It bears no fiscal note, nor does it add to the national deficit. It does not involve any form of taxation. It is not something which needs the force of law in order to be enacted or enforced. In fact, it is not anything that even can be legislated by Congress or through a Presidential Executive Order! It needs no interpretation by the Supreme Court. It is, what it is. The simple cure is LOVE!

The precedence set for it is found in two spiritual principles. Regardless of the color of one’s skin or nationality, age or gender, love others as you love yourself. Do to others, as you would like them to do to you. It is just that simple, and if those of us who claim we are spiritual leaders began to teach this within our churches, synagogues, mosques, temples, and ministries, those who attend and are participants within society would reflect a doctrine which by definition has no place for racism.

In turn, those who lead in government, who spring from a spiritual base which teaches the principle of love, would bear that fruit in government. The market place would be full of its fruit and before long, there would be no place within American society where the power of love does not bring healing, transformation, and unity of hearts, minds and souls.

But first, before this can take place, those within religious circles have to stop denying there is a race problem and be willing to revisit this from a spiritual as well as historical prospective. Even if it means opening up old wounds for a minute, if it is necessary in order to surgically remove the cancerous cells of racism, we have to go there. Because if we continue to skirt around this issue, pretend it does not exist, refuse to deal with it because some parishioners may not be comfortable with the subject, or because it is not politically expedient, then we will be the ones who will be held responsible for a nation which cannot find healing of the soul.

The bottom line is this. The responsibility of the soul rests with the spiritual institutions of society and not government! You cannot heal the land, until you first heal the soul! This means the spiritual leaders of America need to step up their game, come forth, assume our rightful duties, and do what we do best, which is redemption, saving, healing and maintaining of a healthy and loving soul.

I guess you can say, I just took my first sip of tea and now I know at least there can be some good found in what is being brewed, if only we can deal with it!

Despite her tormented conscience, she meets him for clandestine sex wherever and whenever he wishes. Meanwhile, Benita’s brothers have returned from the service; initially, they are grateful to Father for his help, but their trust slowly turns to suspicion. Throughout high school, college, graduate school, beyond, the surreptitious meetings between Benita and the priest go on, alienating her from her family and plunging her into deep distress. Still, she is helpless to change her course. Her anguished family turns to the church for guidance. The Archbishop pledges them to secrecy, blames Benita for ruining his priest and launches a series of creative maneuvers to stop her, including a six-week stay in a psychiatric hospital. How she extricates herself from this hell is a gripping story as well as an inspiring testimony to her strength of character.

As Benita’s friend and classmate from second-grade through college, Virginia Tranel writes from the unique stance of participant-observer. This story is not simply one more account of clerical sexual abuse, but rather an astounding, maddening, compelling look at what it was like to grow up in a family, community and culture so dominated by the Catholic church that no one could acknowledge the ominous events unfolding before them

INTERPOL hunting for Fr. Eric De Jaeger , a John Paul II Pedophile Priests generation. He's caught and is back in Igloolik, Canada

Updated April 16, 2011

Eric Dejaeger is now facing nine charges, including two new sex-related charges as well as one count of failure to appear in court. - Jeanne Gagnon/NNSL photo

Priests don't use violence, usually. They've got the shackles of tradition and dogma to hold their victims down for them.

And of course the real crime here is that these monsters in dog collars were dumped on the native peoples of Canada to rip their way through several generations, and there is no sign of remorse for that from the Vatican.

(See From Nunavut to Lourdes article below)

Interpol has issued a red notice against Father Eric Dejaeger. He was convicted of pedophilia in Canada and given a prison sentence. The Oblate Fathers in Blanden kept him hidden for a decade or he would have served the sentence in Canada.

Father Dejaeger moved to Canada in the 1970s to live on Igloolik island in the desolate north.

In April 1990, he was sentenced to five years in prison for rape of eight children, including boys and girls.

He spent a few months in prison and was paroled. He immediately began re-offending. Nine new charges were placed against him.

The Oblate Fathers in Flanders did not reveal his whereabouts to his parole officer and he was able to flee Canada.

A red notice from Interpol is not the same as an international arrest warrant. It mean that anyone who knows his whereabouts should contact police.

Interpol has issued a reason notice against father Eric Dejaeger. The Flemish clergyman was condemned in Canada because of pedofilie and must there an imprisonment sit out. The priests oblaten in Blanden hold him however for ten year hidden because he are severely already would have sat out in Canada. In 2001 verpreidde Interpol all a first locations message against Dejaeger, when with a warning accompanied: "Person may be dangerous." Dejaeger chose end of years seventy furrow the Canadian nationality and thus perfectly can be handed over would request as a Canada about that. A reason notice by Interpol is not the same as an international apprehensions mandate. It is the intention that men, that the sought person (here) know, contact take up with the police, so that that further can consult with the competent services in Brussels and Ottawa.

The Louvain public prosecutor is on the height of the affair and examines or can enter it into the question till decrepit ring of the Canadian authorities. Besides becomes bill held with the fact that Dejaeger as well the Canadian as the Belgian nationality has. That its condemnation all of 1990 dates, plays also with, according to public prosecutor spokesman Patrick Vits.

(belga)

Runaway Oblate priest appears in Nunavut court

CANADA
Nunatsiaq Online

CHRIS WINDEYER

Fugitive priest Eric Dejaeger returned to Nunavut to face justice Jan. 20 for the first time since fleeing prosecution for child sex charges in 1995.

Dejaeger faces six child sexual abuse charges dating back to his time as an Oblate missionary in Igloolik in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Dejaeger appeared before a Justice of the Peace in an Iqaluit courtroom reluctantly, initially refusing to leave cells at the Iqaluit courthouse.

Fugitive priest arrives in Iqaluit

CANADA
CBC News

A Roman Catholic priest accused of sex crimes against children in Nunavut has arrived in Iqualuit following a stopover in Montreal from Belgium.

Rev. Eric Dejaeger, 63, who is a Canadian citizen, arrived on a commercial flight at 1 p.m. ET Thursday.

RCMP officers accompanied him from the plane into a police truck that took him to the local courthouse for a hearing with a justice of the peace.

Dejaeger was put on Interpol's list of wanted fugitives when the Nunavut Court of Justice issued an arrest warrant in 2002 on six charges involving children in Igloolik, a remote Inuit community in the territory.
Bail hearing on Monday

Dejaeger faces three counts of indecent assault on a male and three counts of buggery, in relation to alleged incidents between 1978 and 1982 in Igloolik, where he had served as a missionary.

His lawyer, Mandy Sammurtok, told the court on Thursday that her client did not want to enter the courtroom. But after some discussion with the Crown, Dejaeger was ordered to appear.

Dejaeger, who did not speak in court, sported a white beard and looked older than he appeared in photographs Interpol had posted on its list of wanted fugitives. He was not wearing shoes.

Sammurtok asked that the case be adjourned until Monday, when a bail hearing will take place. Dejaeger remains in custody in Iqaluit in the meantime.

"We're very glad that this case has finally come back to Nunavut, and that we'll be able to provide closure to both our investigators and the people in Igloolik that were the victims of his crimes," Nunavut RCMP Supt. Howard Eaton told reporters at the Iqaluit detachment.
Fled to Belgium

Dejaeger pleaded guilty in 1990 to nine counts of sex crimes against boys and girls in Baker Lake, another community in Nunavut, and was sentenced to five years in prison.

But by the time the Igloolik charges were issued in 2002, Dejaeger was living freely in Belgium, his country of birth.

According to Belgian media, Dejaeger was living in an Oblate monastery and worked in the Catholic pilgrimage site of Lourdes, France, where he received Flemish pilgrims.

Belgian authorities detained Dejaeger earlier this month for overstaying his legal residency in that country. According to government officials there, the priest gave up his Belgian citizenship when he became a Canadian citizen in 1977.

Dejaeger was put on a plane from Brussels to Montreal on Wednesday.

Eric Dejaeger is a Catholic priest and pedophile who benefited greatly from church policy: when it was learned that he was a child-raping monster, the Catholic Church did the upright, moral thing and kept him on as a priest, but simply shipped him off to the Canadian north where he'd only be raping the Inuit. When the law caught up with him even in that remote place, he fled…and guess where he found shelter and employment? Back in the arms of Mother Church, of course.

The Belgian-born priest, who became a Canadian citizen in 1977, is wanted for three counts of indecent assault on a male and three counts of buggery for incidents involving minors and alleged to have occurred between 1978 and 1982 in Igloolik. These charges were laid after he completed a five-year sentence in April of 1995 (a penitentiary stint, a halfway house then probation) for abusing children in Baker Lake, then part of the Northwest Territories, now part of Nunavut. Dejaeger left Canada before his first court date in June of 1995 and a bench warrant was issued for his arrest.

Six years later, the Interpol red alert was circulated. Nine years after that, in May of this year, Belgian journalist Douglas De Coninck published an article detailing Dejaeger's life on the lam. The priest worked with pilgrims in Lourdes and participated in masses. A member of the Oblate Order of Mary Immaculate, he was living at the order's villa in Blanden. Several months after the article appeared, Dejaeger voluntarily turned himself in at the Leuven police station.

Unfortunately, the Belgian police just turned him loose again, stating that there was no extradition order from Canada. He's on the run again. Given his history, I can guess where we'll find him: turn over a few churches, and he'll be found nestling amongst the friendly priests.

But let's not just blame religion! There's also another nasty story here, of secular authorities turning a blind eye to his activities. He'd been brought before a Canadian judge who didn't seem to think Dejaeger was such a bad fellow.

Oddly, Justice Ted Richard of the Northwest Territories Supreme Court wrote in his sentence decision that Dejaeger was not a pedophile even though "it does not appear that he stopped this activity on his own but only when he was caught." It's unclear how he was caught.

Dejaeger admitted to, among other sexual acts, having anal intercourse with boys and digital vaginal penetration with girls. Yet Richard seemed to praise the priest's restraint:

"Because of the age of the victims of these assaults, consent is not an issue or a factor to be considered. However, it should be noted in fairness to the offender here that no violence was used in committing these assaults," Richard wrote 20 years ago.

New charges against priest in Nunavut include bestiality

The Canadian Press
Fri Apr 15 2011

IQALUIT, NUNAVUT Charges against a priest already facing numerous sex abuse charges against Inuit children now have a count of bestiality added to the charges.

Court documents say the charge, one of five new ones laid this week against Eric Dejaeger, allegedly involved a dog.

The new accusations bring to 28 the number of charges against Dejaeger.

Almost all the counts are sex offences allegedly committed against boys and girls in the remote Nunavut community of Igloolik between 1979 and 1982.

Dejaeger, who was expelled from Belgium earlier this year on immigration violations, is being held in custody awaiting bail in Iqaluit.

He received a five-year sentence in 1990 after pleading guilty to nine counts of sex crimes against boys and girls in Baker Lake in the 1980s.

Bye bye Japan

One artsy mama featured me on her blog. As you can see I wrote the answers to her questions a while back, because I'm no longer living in Japan nor an English teacher. Actually, after having lived and worked here for 1150 days, I'm flying to the Netherlands in a few hours, for a nice vacation. And next month Yasu and I are moving to San Francisco!
